Elizur Wright Tower: Original vs. Restored
This interactive 3D model shows the tower with the original texture. Use the toggle below to switch between the original (with graffiti) and restored (graffiti removed) textures. Use your mouse to rotate, zoom, and explore the monument.
The Elizur Wright Tower, a historic monument, had been defaced with graffiti that obscured its original appearance. Using high-resolution 3D scanning and digital restoration techniques, we were able to digitally remove the graffiti and restore the tower to show how it looked before it was vandalized. This project demonstrates the power of digital restoration in cultural heritage preservation.
The cover image above shows a side-by-side comparison of the restoration work. On the left, you can see the tower as it was scanned with visible graffiti, while the right side shows the digitally restored version with the vandalism removed. This visual comparison highlights how digital restoration can reveal the monument's original appearance while preserving the underlying architectural details captured in the 3D scan.
Digital Restoration in Practice
This project serves as an example of how digital restoration can help preserve and document cultural heritage. By carefully removing the graffiti from the 3D model while preserving the underlying architectural details, we created a digital record of the monument's intended appearance. This approach allows us to:
- Document original appearance: Create a permanent record of how the monument looked before defacement
- Preserve historical accuracy: Maintain architectural details while removing modern vandalism
- Enable virtual restoration: Provide a way to experience the monument as it was meant to be seen
- Support conservation planning: Help inform physical restoration efforts if needed
Digital restoration complements physical conservation by providing a non-invasive way to visualize and document cultural heritage. While the physical monument may still bear the marks of vandalism, the digital model preserves its original appearance for future generations.
